Multiple Teams · Spartans Cruise Past Cross Keys

With Hurricane Matthew showers suddenly appearing, North Springs and Cross Keys played the early game at Adams Stadium October 7th. As expected, the Spartans quickly took care of business en route to a 55-0 win. Fred Lyles returned the kickoff to the Spartan 42. After Justin Ruiz gained 13 yards, QB Rees Viersen made his only downfield pass of the game to Vegas Hayden, who raced for a 45-yard touchdown 41 seconds into the game. TJ Faust and Jahvon Millard wreaked havoc on Indians’ offense, which elected to quick kick on 3rd down. After a Ruiz TD was waved off for holding, Hayden took a jet sweep 39 yards for a touchdown. Nate Hardin helped pin Cross Keys inside their 10. Following a Cross Keys punt, Ruiz took the first carry 36 yards for his first TD. Antonio Suarez and Hardin stopped CC progress. Viersen found Josh Vinson on a roll-out screen with a beautiful cutback for a 57-yard TD and 27-0 first quarter lead. Terry Moore and Millard made nice defensive plays on the next series. A Dion Watkins TD punt return was annulled by a penalty.
Three consecutive Ruiz rumbles opened the 2nd quarter, resulting in another TD. Gralyn Stokes alertly recovered a fumble at the 19. Ruiz ran right on the first play for another TD. Cross Keys earned a first down on their next possession. The Spartans finished the half with a screen to Vegas, who then ran to the 4 before Ruiz punched in a TD for a 48-0 halftime lead.
Caleb Redd and Ken Marble opened the 3rd quarter defense. Caleb Neely followed up a tackle with recovering the muffed Cross Keys punt snap at their 20. Brian Adams played QB for the entire second half and ran the conservative offense well. Zahir Nichols and Fred Lyles got carries. Caleb Neely nearly forced a safety on the next Indians series. Evan Murphy also made nice tackles.
The brief 4th quarter opened with strong carries by Jalen Delaney, Zahir Nichols, and Caleb Neely, who wrapped up the scoring with a touchdown for the final 55-point margin. The clock ran out, enabling the soggy players to congratulate each other for a game played with outstanding sportsmanship by both squads.
Next Friday, Coach Earthwind Moreland brings his #5 Grady Knights quarterbacked by Cam Newton’s brother Caylin to North Springs for a huge test for the Spartans.
