North Springs High School
River Ridge High School
What started out as a back and forth struggle on a soft and slick field on a Friday night at River Ridge High School saw the Spartan Boys varsity soccer team pull out a 4-0 win on the road.
What looked like a probable 0-0 score at the half turned into a 2-0 lead for the Spartans. The Spartans were threatening on the attack as halftime was approaching when the Knights committed a foul in the box giving the Spartans a PK chance. Sylvester Balbuena stepped to the mark and placed a shot in the lower left corner by the keeper to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead with 2:54 before half time. It only took Sylvester Balbuena 16 seconds before he recovered a defensive mistake in the back to place a shot which was misplayed by the keeper allowing the ball to slip over the goal to put North Springs up 2-0 at 2:38 remaining in the half. The Spartans defense comprising of Ryan Kaplin, Justin Kaplin, Sam Fox and Moises Gomez continued to turn back the Knights time and time again as the Spartans continued to put the pressure on the Knights defense.
In the second half with 21:15 left, a ball was played in to goal but was not cleared out when Hassan Bassit collected it on the right side and put a shot by the keeper to make the score 3-0.
Once again as the officials gave out verbal warnings of continued rough play, Jael Resendiz was taken down and given a direct free kick 20+ yards from goal with 18:48 to play. Jael’s shot was to the right side and found the goal to finish the scoring giving the Spartans a 4-0 win. With a solid lead in the second half, the Spartans were able to sub in and get all supporting players some valuable playing time.
The Boys will take the field today hosting North Forsyth at 7:30pm.
