Game Recap

North Springs wanted to make Senior Night unforgettable for a group of players who were fundamental to the resurgence of Spartan football. That’s just what they got with an 88-0 victory over the Cross Keys Indians. The Indians took advantage of a fumbled punt after their first series to surprise the Spartan defense with a pass to the 29 and QB keeper to the 15. Arnando Vargas restored order by taking a high snap back to midfield. QB Brian Adams hit Jalen Delaney for a screen that turned into a 51-yard TD, completed by Osman Ruzayev’s first of many extra points with 4 minutes left in the 1st quarter. After a brief Cross Keys possession, QB Adams threw a screen right to Zahir Nichols for a 50-yard TD. Jonathan Green returned an interception for a TD moments later.

Continuing to pin the Indians deep, the Spartans opened the 2nd quarter with TJ Faust tackling the QB for a safety. After Jalen Delaney returned the safety kick to the 23, Adams floated a pass to Nick Keou for a TD. Linebacker Evan Murphy returned an interception for a TD and 37-0 lead with 11:17 left in the 2nd quarter. Kyree Green did the quick work with a screen reception and carry for the next TD. After the Indians gained some yardage before punting, Dante Camp returned the next punt for a TD. When the Spartans got the ball back, Jahvon Millard swept right for a 36-yard TD. Before the half could end, Demarco Childs scooped at a Cross Keys fumble on their next play and returned it for a TD and 66-0 halftime lead.

The 2nd half clock was running throughout. Justyn Harris returned the opening kickoff for another TD. After Matt Rosenstein’s pick 6 was pushed back to the 20 for a block in the back, Caleb Neely ran 20 yards for another TD. Four TD’s were waved off on the next series for penalties. Cross Keys snapped the ball out of the end zone for another safety. Freshman J Dugger returned the safety kick for a final TD and the 88-0 score. The Spartans travel to Grady Friday to resume region play.

Game Recap

North Springs fell to the Grady Knights 30-26 in a game that featured a back-and-forth opening, a big Grady scoring barrage, lots of action but no scoring, and then a wild Spartan rally that almost saved the game. Grady drove to the Spartan 3 on the opening possession, when Graylyn Stokes forced the Knight QB to throw an interception to Evan Murphy. Unfortunately, the first Spartan play was also an interception. The North Springs defense forced a pooch kick to their 8. QB Brian Adams hit Jalen Delaney for 13 yards and then Ryan Gordon for 56 yards. Adams targeted Delaney for a TD pass in the left endzone, capped by Osman Ruzayev’s PAT and 7-0 lead. The Spartan defense led by Stanley Jackson, Jahvon Millard, and Zahzee White forced a punt, but a ‘running into the kicker’ call extended the Knight drive, setting up a long TD carry but missed extra point.

The opening Spartan 2nd quarter drive did little, but the defense rose up to stop Grady on their next 4th down. After a short next possession, punter Landon Lieber alertly raced 20 yards backwards to recover a very high snap for a Grady safety and 8-7 deficit. Two questionable referee calls helped Grady score another TD and get the 2-point conversion for a 16-8 lead. An incomplete Spartan pass was called a fumble, setting up another Grady TD. A fumbled Spartan shotgun snap set up the Knights at the 18 with one minute left before halftime. Despite sideline warnings to watch for a fake field goal, the Spartans were unable to stop a TD pass from a fake field goal to trail 30-7 at halftime.

After the Spartans punted on their opening drive of the 3rd quarter, the defense bent but didn’t break, with Stanley Jackson tackling the QB on 4th down at the 9 yard line. The Spartans could not move the ball and punted only to their 30. Despite a questionable pass interference call in the endzone, the Spartans stopped Grady on 4th down at the 10 yard line. The Spartans finally got moving, driving to the 50 before losing a fumble early in the 4th quarter. Grady drove to the 14 but were stopped again on 4th down with 6 minutes left in the game.

Trailing 30-7 with 6 minutes left, the Spartans could be forgiven for giving up. Instead, Brian Adams hit Jalen Delaney to the 30. Caleb Neely gained about 15 yards before being tackled; however, since he was atop Knight defenders, he had the presence of mind to pop up and race untouched for a 70-yard touchdown and 30-13 score. The Spartan defense forced a punt returned to the 47. Adams connected with Ryan Gordon to the 15. Jalen Delaney caught another TD with 1:13 left and a 30-19 deficit. Osman Ruzayev bounced a textbook onside kickoff, recovered by Caleb Neely at the Grady 48. Neely caught an Adams pass, setting up yet another Adams-Delaney TD pass and 30-26 score with 43 seconds left in the game. The Spartans nearly recovered another excellent Ruzayev bouncing onside kickoff, but the ball was deflected just out of reach out of bounds. Grady took a knee to hang on for the victory.
The Spartans will host Riverwood Friday for Homecoming.

Game Recap

The North Springs welcomed the Decatur Bulldogs September 15, but the hospitality didn’t last long. Following Osman Rusuyav’s first of multiple kickoffs into the endzone, the Spartans defense recovered a Decatur fumble on the first play from scrimmage. QB Brian Adams hit Zahir Nichols with 2 passes to the 9. From there, Adams connected with Win Williams for a beautiful low touchdown pass in the back left of the endzone. Jalen Willingham and Jahvon Millard helped ensure a Bulldof 3-and-out. Adams made a sharp 35-yard pass to Win Reynolds at the 3. The lead quickly grew to 14-0 when Kyree Greene powered through a big hole opened by the offensive line of Jorge Gonzalez, Brendan Liu, DanTee Palmer, Francis Shema, Jordan Harvey, and TJ Faust and lineman-as-fullback Graylyn Stokes.

After an exchange of punts, the Bulldog QB made the mistake of throwing in the vicinity of Jahvon Millard, who intercepted the pass. A long completion to Jalen Delaney was squandered by a subsequent interception. The Spartan defense held on 4th down at their 27 with a big tackle by Neriyan Brown. After a motion penalty, the Spartan offense exploded with a 78-yard completion from Adams to Nick Keou streaking down the right side. Evan Murphy and Jalen Willingham forced a QB fumble recovered by JaRon Bradley. Osman Rusuyav nailed a 40-yard field goal for a 24-0 lead. Graylyn Stokes abruptly ended a Decatur carry and Jalen Delaney made a tackle for loss on 4th down.

The next possession featured a balanced from new head coach Scotty Parker’s offense. Kyree Greene, Zahir Nichols, Ryan Gordon all moved the ball to set up a Brian Adams 24-yard 4th down touchdown pass to a wide open Jalen Delaney. Even good Decatur plays ended poorly for them when a successful QB keeper ended up with JuJuan Woodall stripping the ball and returning it to the 18. Kyree Greene gained good yardage to set up a Brian Adams QB 2-yard keeper for a touchdown and 38-0 halftime lead. With a running clock, the 2nd half went swiftly ending with a 38-7 Spartan victory.

The Spartans next travel to Lakewood Stadium Saturday afternoon to face the strong Carver Panthers.

Game Recap

North Springs traveled south to Lakewood Stadium for a toasty 3 pm Saturday kickoff against the strong Carver Panthers. The Panthers drew first blood with a 4th down pass to their tall Under Armour All American receiver for a TD and 8-0 lead. The Spartans responded with a balanced attack featuring Brian Adams passes to Win Reynolds and Nick Keou and runs by Kyree Greene and then Adams for a TD.

Following a Panther TD early in the 2nd quarter, the Spartan offense featured a heavy dose of Zahir Nichols to set up a 27-yard field goal by Osman Rusuyav to pull within 16-10. After holding Carver on the next possession, the Spartans did little on the next drive. However, a well executed fake punt kept the drive alive and set up a Brian Adams completion to Jalen Delaney, who streaked right across the field for a touchdown to tie the score. late in the 2nd quarter. Before the fans could sit down, Carver returned the kickoff for a TD and 24-16 lead. The Spartans’ Zahir Nichols returned serve, carrying the kickoff to the Carver 11. Jalen Delaney made an amazing TD catch, but the official called a mysterious offensive interference penalty on the double-covered receiver.

The 2nd half started with a short Spartan drive. A seemingly simple sideline Carver pass to their All American suddenly turned into a 57-yard TD and 30-16 lead. Brian Adams hit Zahir Nichols with a pass over the middle, where Nichols spun and raced for a 54-yard TD. After Carver intercepted near the end zone and began driving, Spartan Neriyan Brown made a beautiful interception and returned it to the 41.

In the 4th quarter, punts and penalty flags were abundant. Carver appeared to put the game away with a touchdown with 2:09 remaining. The Spartans answered with an Adams 23-yard pass to Zahir Nichols, a 12-yard pass to Evan Murphy, and a 4th down 26-yard pass to Murphy to set up an Adams keeper for a TD and the final 36-29 score. The Spartans will host Maynard Jackson High School Friday at 7:30 pm.

Game Recap

After edging Maynard Jackson High School last season, the North Springs Spartans knew they were in for a battle with the improved Jaguars this season. The game produced a barn-burner but in an unorthodox manner. The teams swapped punts on their opening possessions. Jalen Delaney made terrific pass breakups both on the initial drive and on the second series in the end zone. On 4th down, a Jaguar receiver out-jumped two Spartan defenders in the end zone for a 6-0 lead. The Jags soon returned an intercepted pass for a 13-0 lead. Another interception ended a 2nd quarter Spartan drive. Later trailing 19-0, QB Brian Adams welcomed Nick Keou back onto the field after an ankle injury last week with a 68-yard pass play to the 4-yard line. Adams kept the ball to cut the lead to 19-7. Jackson responded with a TD just before halftime for a 26-7 lead. The Jaguars opened the 3rd quarter with another TD drive and 32-7 lead. Just as the Spartans were driving, an interception was returned to the Spartan 29. Facing a looming 40-7 deficit, the Spartan defense turned the game around by holding the Jags on 4th down at the Spartan 7 yard line with 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Caleb Neely used excellent blocking to get the Spartans moving, assisted by two personal fouls on Jackson. QB Adams hit Zahir Nichols for a touchdown and 32-14 score. On 4th down at the goal line, Jalen Delaney and JuJuan Woodall broke up a TD pass. The Spartans squandered a 4th quarter scoring opportunity following a Caleb Neely carry to the 1 yard line by losing a fumbled exchange at the 1. Jahvon Millard swooped in to block the next Jaguar punt, which was recovered by Graylyn Stokes. QB Brian Adams followed his O-line for a short TD to pull within 32-20. Holder QB Adams pulled the ball on the PAT fake, ran right, and lofted the ball left to kicker Osman Rusuyav in the endzone. Rusuyav was pummeled by the defenders but held on for a 2-point conversion and 32-22 deficit with 2:50 left in the game.

Big tackles by Kyree Greene and Jalen Willingham forced a Jaguar punt. Caleb Neely blew threw a big hole to race to the Jag 25. When a flag erased a Jalen Delaney running TD on 4th down, Brian Adams threw a 16-yard pass to Delaney for a TD and 32-29 score with 58 seconds left. The Spartan onsides kick was deflected out of bounds, enabling Jackson to hold on for the win. What the box score won’t show was the number of key Spartan players fighting courageously through injured ankles and other injuries to contribute to the impressive comeback. The Spartans will host Cross Keys for early Senior Night and Pink Out Friday at 7:30 pm.
